This drawing is another of Collins' early works in the "Model Citizens" series. Collins based the drawing on a photograph of the iconic, Polish supermodel, Anja Rubik, taken by controversial photographer Terry Richardson, whose portraits Collins has long admired. However, as with other works in the series, Collins has transformed the portrait, translating it into his signature restrained palette and high contrast style.
Collins was struck by Rubik's deer-in-the-headlights-like stare, which reflect Richardson's candid, flash photography aesthetic. Whereas many of Collins' subjects in the "Model Citizens" exude confidence or even defiance, Rubik seems guarded and vulnerable. Collins underscored that unease with his chiaroscuro lighting.
Collins created this second portrait of Rubik as a study for a painting.
