This vector illustration is Collins' study of French artist, YZ's (pronounced like "eyes") iconic work, "Open Your Eyes", which first began to appear in the streets of Paris around 2000. "Open Your Eyes" is one of Collins' favourite artworks and is a major stylistic influence.
Collins was struck by the austere contrast and imposing presence of YZ's portrait of a rapper. The raking light and deep shadows create an air of mystery. However, in his own study, Collins mirrored the left side of the portrait to make it symmetrical and further stylize the composition. This simple act transformed YZ's portrait into a symbol.
